Onam ; The Traditional Keralites Festival

      Kerala,  an evergreen land sandwiched in between the Arabian sea to the west and Western ghats in its eastern boundary, the mesmerizing land of splendid beaches,  emerald back waters, outstanding high range resorts, handsome hill stations and wild life retreats, popularly known as Gods own country, literally ' a heavenly place on the earth.
      And now for Malayalees, it Is the festive season,  one of the greatest festivals in India,  Onam,  which is celebrated by Keralites so elaborately,  wherever they are in this world irrespective of their caste or religion. 


    It's so amazing to be informed that Onam is not the only celebration which shares the Legend of Mahabali; there are some other festivals in India called Balipratipada, which was celebrated in the northern part of India especially in Gujarat and Maharashtra and which is celebrated in the fourth day of Diwali.

    The Legendary festival of Mallus owes to the Daitya King Mahabali, who was the ruler of the Earth and during his reign there was no inequality or poverty and the Earth witnessed its Golden era. The popularity of this great King made the Devas to be envious that made them to convince Lord Mahavishnu to take an avatar,  the fifth incarnation 'Vamana' to send Mahabali to the underworld. As he was so generous King he was granted by the Lord to visit his Kingdom to inspect about the welfare of his people once in a year and this special day become the greatest festivals of Kerala, the so called 'Onam '. People of Kerala make elaborate preparations to celebrate it to the most possible manner.

     The celebrations start from the nakshatra day of Attam to the tenth day Thiruvonam during the Chingam month of Malayalam calendar. Apart from a festival now Onam became a strong emotions of Keralites and it gives an impression of the lost era of the Mahabali s reign of equality, wealthiness, wellness and  brotherhood .

      Costuming themselves with new dresses,  decorating the porches with colourful flower carpets or rangolis  ,with cheerful faces, joyful games and sports, Keralites welcome their King with their innocent hearts.

     The popular events of Onam are  pookkalam(floral decoration), Onam sadhya, the famous water sport of Kerala - the snake boat race  and thug of war-traditionally called 'vadam vali '  and also other sports which are less popular as compared like Onathallu- Marshall wrestling performance  during Onam season,  thalapanthukali, and Pulikali- the tiger dance and all.

     The Snake boat race or vallamkali is the inevitable part of Onam celebration and it achieved global popularity in a short period and drew attention to the world travelers. Olympics  is nothing when compared to this honestly.

      The clap dance of ladies called 'Kaikottikali' is also worth to be mentioned in this occasion. The kadha kali is also very popular with the magical performance of the artists during Onam season.
